Plagiarism
Dear Students,
I would like to point out that in all your studies and written work you should understand the regulations concerning the Legal Framework for Examinations for the Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree Programmes of the University of Rostock.
This can be found here:
https://www.uni-rostock.de/storages/uni-rostock/UniHome/HQE/Studienreform/Aktuelle_Ordnungen/RPO_english_summary.pdf
Please take a look at
Ҥ 14 Non-attendance, withdrawal, academic dishonesty, breach of regulations
(3) An examination will be marked as “fail” (5.0) in case of academic dishonesty, which also includes plagiarism or use of inadmissible sources of help.”
A guideline for proper citations can be found here (Source: Technical University of Munich: TUM Citation Guide):
https://mediatum.ub.tum.de/doc/1236069/1236069.pdf
I will cite some essential sentences from page 10:
“Plagiarism is when you present someone else’s work as your own.”
“To present someone else’s intellectual property as your own disagrees with the central rules of good scientific practice. If citations are not marked as such, the reader is led to believe that it is an academic work attributable to the author. Plagiarism is not about specific citation styles or oversights in citation, but deliberate concealment of external sources. It is where other authors’ texts are included verbatim, paraphrased, or translated, but not marked as citations. Plagiarism is a serious offence, and may lead to the disqualification of an academic title, or even a criminal prosecution.”
“There are different forms of plagiarism. The main types are
a) Complete plagiarism / copy & paste plagiarism: to use another author’s text unchanged,
without citation, and pretend it is one’s own work.
b) Clause splicing / Shake & paste plagiarism: combining fragments of different texts or
sentences to form a new text without citation, thus presenting it as one’s own line of thought.
c) Idea plagiarism / obfuscation: presenting another author’s ideas in your own words with out
citing the source.
d) Translation plagiarism: Translating an original text from another language without citing the
source.”
Your text should contain a significant part of own intellectual work! Please ask your supervising assistant in case of any questions.
Please keep in mind: we will not tolerate any kind of plagiarism. Each written work of a student will be checked by anti-plagiarism software if there is any doubt about its originality.
You have to sign a Declaration of Academic Honesty for all your submissions.
