Project B03: Energy-autonomous platform for electrical stimulation implants

Work programme

This project provides a highly integrated, ultra-low-power electronic system to be used in novel electrically active implants, as proposed in this CRC. The research is oriented towards a predominantly digital, intelligent platform. We propose a modular Software Defined Implant Platform that allows for software based, patient-specific and closed-loop electrical stimulation, configuration for different types of implants and management of multiple sources of energy. Sub-cutaneous thermoelectric energy harvesting will be explored in order to make it available for the implants in this CRC. The platform enables remote configuration and monitoring of the implant's operational parameters as well as monitoring of the patient's biological status.
